In December of 1997, I was diagnosed HIV positive, which provoked a huge change in my life. In early 1988, following a series of extremely emotional events, I started meds and almost immediately after, I began extensive research into natural alternatives to the drugs I was taking.

I incorporated many natural alternatives into my daily routine of the Zerit, Viramune, and Epivir I was prescribed. This included things such as Neem Leaf Extract, Olive Leaf Extract, Noni Juice, and more. Additionally, my doctor suggested a regimen of a multi-vitamin, beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium.

I took the meds and the alternatives religiously until the middle of 2001 when complications arose in getting my meds, and I was missing doses. Having been warned by my doctors that skipping doses could cause the virus to mutate and me to have to switch medications, I fearfully made the choice to stop the drugs altogether. Knowing that I couldn’t just ignore my health, I became obsessed with replacing the meds with things such as massage therapy, acupuncture, pain and stress management, and more.

The combination of alternative supplements and therapies was very time consuming and expensive, but I felt I did the right thing by getting off the meds. I decided to end my emotional attachment to the meds. Ironically, I began working in the HIV healthcare industry, and very rapidly caught the attention of clients and clinicians who were interested the ‘secret’ to my good health. There I was with this supposedly fatal illness, not taking treatment drugs, never sick, and looking as healthy as I felt. This led to my writing articles for local newsletters, and even a guest spot on a morning radio show.

In 2004, I was doing some online HIV research when I came across the Alive & Well web site. I was fascinated. I did a lot of reading on the site, both at work and at home. This led to me buying Christine’s book “What If Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?” Once in my hands, I could NOT put that book down until I read it in its entirety.

At that point, my life changed again. It took about two months for me to get all the damaging programming out of me and feel like a normal person again. For the first time in almost seven years, I was able to enjoy sex. I could be with my partner of three years without fear, something I thought I would never be able to do for the rest of my life!

With this newfound knowledge, I no longer felt it was necessary to pursue the alternative path with the fanaticism that I had before. I still feel everything I did in that respect was indeed healthy, however I am not convinced that it is pertinent to my survival.

In January of 2005, I made one last visit to my infectious diseases doctor that had been treating me since 2002. At that appointment, I tortured him as usual with all my questions and challenges, but this time he confessed that it has never been proven that I am infected with anything!

Even though I had already known this, hearing it come from the mouth of the doctor that had been treating me for years as if I really were infected, struck a nerve. I severed all connection between the virus and myself, both mentally and with free government services. I now live without both, in health.
